MCU Coatings
MCU-Coatings is a global leading manufacturer of moisture cure polyurea (MCU) marine and protective coatings to protect steel, concrete, aluminium, stainless steel and iron from corrosion. With a history of 30 years, currently, MCU-Coatings is one of the fastest growing moisture cure polyurea (MCU) coating technologies worldwide.
Moisture cured urethanes have been around for years as they were invented in the 1940s.
They have a wide variety of benefits:
- Urethanes have really good flexibility, chemical resistance, durability and heat resistance.
- Moisture cure polymers are single component, so do not require any mixing, which makes them really easy to use. They are also no limited by high relative humidity, like all other polymer coatings.
- The moisture curing technology cures quickly and is not temperature dependant, and because moisture is plentiful and always available, the polymer cures fully and is therefore stable. What this means is that they do not react with contaminants and they are less affected by ultra-violet (UV) rays.
- The curing reaction uses up any micro-moisture on the substrate, thereby eliminating the cause of any potential secondary corrosion reactions under the coating surface that invariably results in a loss of adhesion and in coatings ageing prematurely.
After commercialising his new technology in the 1980s and 1990s, the inventor went back into the laboratory in 2000 to upgrade and improve on his formulations.
As a result MCU-Coatings now has a two-coat, thin film technology that, in independent testing, has achieved over 25 years to first maintenance in a C5 environment using a ST3 surface preparation.
The use of a high-quality urethane base resins that are stable and have these excellent performance fundamentals also means that MCU-Coatings do not need an extensive range of specialist coatings – like most other protective coating manufacturers.
The primers are designed to adhere, the intermediate coatings are designed for high build and, together with the top coats the MCU-Coatings product range, can be applied almost anywhere and addresses over 90% of all protective coatings challenges.
